The Defense Ministry held an opening ceremony Monday morning for the defense inspection headquarters, set up to help prevent irregularities such as bid-rigging and the exposure of classified information.
The new body was created Saturday in line with the abolition of the Defense Facilities Administration Agency and its integration into the Defense Ministry in light of a series of bid-rigging scandals.
The headquarters is under the direct control of Defense Minister Masahiko Komura. It is tasked with auditing all aspects of the ministry's affairs, and will visit ministry-related organizations and entities nationwide.
In addition to carrying out audits, the establishment has been tasked with providing the minister with suggestions that will help ensure the ministry obeys all rules and regulations. The headquarters is headed by Defense Inspector General Masafumi Sakurai, who is one rank below the vice ministerial post. The organization has 57 members.
