Jan 27 03:47 AM US/EasternNAHA, Japan, Jan. 27 (AP) - (Kyodo) — A U.S. soldier charged with negligent driving resulting in death over a fatal accident last year in Yomitan, Okinawa Prefecture, was indicted Wednesday on an additional charge of hit-and-run.
Prosecutors took the step of a supplementary indictment against Clyde Gunn, a 27-year-old staff sergeant at the Torii Communication Station, as they initially indicted him with only material evidence. He had been refusing to be questioned unless the process was audio-visually recorded.
Gunn was arrested Jan. 8, the day after the initial indictment which enabled Japanese authorities to have him handed over by the U.S. military in line with the bilateral Status of Forces Agreement.
According to the indictment, he hit Masakazu Hokama, 66, who was taking a walk near a car around 5:50 a.m. last Nov. 7 but did not try to help him and failed to report the accident. Hokama later died of a cervical fracture and other injuries.
