Jan 25 08:29 PM US/EasternTOKYO, Jan. 26 (AP) - (Kyodo) — Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama reiterated Tuesday the victory in the mayoral election in Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, of an anti-U.S. military base candidate is the "manifestation of public will."
His remarks to reporters followed Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirofumi Hirano saying the previous day, "There is no reason why we have to take that (the election result) into account."
Hatoyama also said a government panel studying where to relocate the U.S. Marine Corps' Futemma Air Station in Ginowan will reach a conclusion on the issue by conducting a "zero-base" review.
Nago mayor-elect Susumu Inamine is opposed to relocating the Futemma facility to his less densely populated city as agreed by Japan and the United States in 2006.
