Hatoyama Wants Ozawa to Stay as DPJ Secretary-General

    April 28, 2010

Tokyo, April 28 (Jiji Press) -- Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama suggested Wednesday that he wants to keep Ichiro Ozawa as secretary-general of his ruling Democratic Party of Japan.

The comments came one day after an inquest panel recommended that Ozawa be indicted on charges of violating the political funds control law.

Hatoyama, who is also president of the DPJ, told reporters that he wants Ozawa to remain in his post.

While some DPJ members are seeking Ozawa's resignation as secretary-general, Hatoyama apparently thinks Ozawa's election skills are necessary for this summer's House of Councillors elections, sources familiar with the matter said.

Ozawa himself said Tuesday he will stay on.
