Okinawa leaders ask US to remove base

    April 27, 2010

Leaders of Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa have asked the US government to help move the US Futenma air base outside the prefecture.

Naha Mayor Takeshi Onaga and other 6 people visited the US Embassy in Tokyo on Tuesday.

They met Political Minister Robert Luke and delivered a resolution adopted at Sunday's huge anti-base protest in Okinawa.

They stressed that calls for the removal of the base are growing in Okinawa and prompted nonpartisan leaders to hold their first rally on Sunday.

Luke said the existing plan to relocate the base to a costal area in Nago City, also in Okinawa, would be best for the prefecture and the 2 countries.
