Tokyo, April 27 (Jiji Press) -- The Japanese government has decided to propose to make a revision in the current plan to relocate the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma air station in Okinawa in a way that the environmental impact of the relocation may be reduced, officials said Tuesday.
The existing plan to relocate the base in Ginowan involves the establishment of runways on landfill in the coastal district of Henoko in the Marines' Camp Schwab in Nago, another city in the southernmost island prefecture.
The government is now considering building a runway on a pile-supported pier, a method which does not involve reclamation work and is thus believed to pose smaller impact on the environment than the current plan, agreed on with the United States in 2006, the official said.
Tokyo plans to start full-fledged talks with Washington upon proposing the pier method, the officials said.
Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Nago Mayor Susumu Inamine flatly rejected the pier method.
