US Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell has called Japan's recent proposals encouraging, regarding the relocation of the US Marines Futenma Air Station in Okinawa.

Campbell spoke at a lecture meeting in Hong Kong on Monday, one day before visiting Japan.

He said there remains a lot of hard work to be done to solve the issue. But he said some of the recent dialogue between the US and Japan and some of the proposals look encouraging.

Campbell said he looks forward to the next intense period of talks between the 2 countries.

NHK's reporter says Campbell appears to take note that some Japanese officials are examining the possibility of accepting the existing 2006 agreement, which is to relocate the Futenma air field with some amendments.

In 2006, the 2 countries agreed to transfer the functions of the Futenma base to the less-crowded coastal area of the US Marines Camp Schwab in Nago City, Okinawa.

Campbell also said he has confidence in the future of Japan-US relations.
