Chronology of key events related to Okinawa reversion

    TOKYO, April 9 (AP) - (Kyodo) — The following is a chronology of major events related to Okinawa's reversion to Japan and subsequent developments.

    April 1945 -- U.S. forces land on main island of Okinawa.

    August 1945 -- World War II ends.

    June 1971 -- Okinawa reversion pact signed.

    April 1972 -- Mainichi Shimbun reporter Takichi Nishiyama arrested over coverage of bilateral secret pact on Okinawa reversion.

    May 1972 -- Okinawa returns to Japan.

    May 1978 -- Nishiyama's conviction finalized at Supreme Court.

    May 2000 -- U.S. documents found indicating existence of secret pact.

    June 2002 -- Additional documents found on secret pact.

    April 2005 -- Ex-Mainichi reporter Nishiyama files damages suit seeking state compensation.

    September 2008 -- Supreme Court rejects Nishiyama's claims.

    March 2009 -- Lawsuit seeking disclosure of papers on secret pact filed with Tokyo District Court.

    March 2010 -- Foreign Ministry panel acknowledges secret pact in broad sense over cost burdens for Okinawa reversion.

    April 9, 2010 -- Tokyo District Court orders state to disclose diplomatic papers on Okinawa reversion and pay 100,000 yen to each of the plaintiffs for damaging their right to know.
