Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is arranging a meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in the United States next week.
Foreign Ministry Katsuya Okada told reporters on Friday that preparations were now underway. Both leaders will participate in the 2-day summit in Washington which begins April 12th.
If the talks go ahead, it will be the first face to face meeting between Hatoyama and Hu since last November when they met during the Summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Singapore.
Hatoyama and Hu are expected to discuss pending bilateral issues, including a dispute over natural gas exploration in the East China Sea.
