Hatoyama May Sit Next to Obama at Nuclear Summit Dinner

    April 8, 2010

Tokyo, April 8 (Jiji Press) -- Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama may sit next to U.S. President Barack Obama at a nuclear security summit dinner in Washington on Monday, a Japanese government source said Thursday.

The Japanese and U.S. governments are planning to make such an arrangement so that the two leaders can have an informal conversation, the source said.

Hatoyama hopes to brief Obama about progress made in his government's discussions on where to relocate the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma air station in Okinawa Prefecture and to tell him that Tokyo aims to make a final decision on the Futenma issue in May, the source said.

The prime minister told reporters Thursday night that he wants to talk on Japan's review process. He added, however, that he has no intention to speak to the media about what he is to convey to the president.

Japan has explored the possibility of an official bilateral summit on the sidelines of the two-day security conference but given it up after the United States decided not to set an Obama-Hatoyama meeting.
