Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has praised US President Barack Obama for his new nuclear strategy, which limits the use of nuclear weapons by the United States.

The Obama administration on Tuesday announced the country's first Nuclear Posture Review in 8 years.

It says the US will not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Hatoyama on Wednesday called the new strategy a first step toward a nuclear-free world. He praised US efforts to significantly reduce the role and number of its nuclear weapons, although it was natural for the US to sustain a nuclear deterrent to guarantee the safety of its allies.

At next week's nuclear security summit in Washington, Hatoyama also said he hopes to discuss with Obama negative security assurance, which is the policy of not using nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states.

He praised the United States for its decision to adopt the policy, saying that it is very encouraging for the world's largest nuclear power to announce such a stance.
