Hatoyama rules out existing relocation plan

    April 25, 2010

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama says the government does not intend to seek a settlement based on the existing plan for the relocation of the US Marine Corps' Futenma Air Station in Okinawa.

Hatoyama was on Saturday answering questions from reporters about a US newspaper article on the relocation issue.

The Washington Post reported that Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada told US Ambassador John Roos that Japan is moving toward broadly accepting the relocation plan agreed to in 2006.

However, Hatoyama said the government doesn't accept the plan.

He said anyone who has visited Henoko in Okinawa's Nago City would think it is outrageous to reclaim land offshore to construct a US runway.

Hatoyama said it's a fact that a meeting was held between Okada and Roos, but the content of the newspaper report is not necessarily true.
