Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has welcomed the new US-Russia nuclear disarmament treaty.

Hatoyama told reporters on Friday that it is great news for the world that the 2 countries will be cutting back their nuclear warheads and launch vehicles.

He said the 2 countries have to do more for nuclear disarmament but that he hopes they will both quickly ratify the treaty.

Hatoyama added that Japan will continue to lead global efforts in realizing a nuclear-free world, as it is the only nation to have suffered nuclear attacks in war.
