Hatoyama's Reform Team Begins New Round of Spending Reviews

    April 23, 2010

Tokyo, April 23 (Jiji Press) -- Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's administrative reform team on Friday began a new round of reviews aimed at reducing wasteful spending.

On the first day, the Government Revitalization Unit urged the Japan International Cooperation Agency to cut running expenses, including what they see as high executive pay, further.

The unit's examiners, including lawmakers and private-sector experts, also demanded that JICA strengthen prior screenings of yen loans to developing countries to make them effective.

In the new round set to continue until Wednesday, the examiners review 151 projects at 47 of the country's 104 independent administrative agencies to see if they are really needed or could be done by the private sector.

Hatoyama apparently sees the examiners' public hearings of officials at independent administrative agencies, which are broadcast live online, as a chance to win back popularity as he struggles with sagging public support.
