Tokyo, April 16 (Jiji Press) -- Japan lodged a protest Friday after a South Korean national research institute announced plans to conduct a geological survey in waters around disputed islands.
The survey cannot be acceptable, given Japan's stance over the ownership of the islands, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Tetsuro Fukuyama said in a phone call to South Korean Ambassador to Japan Kwon Chul Hyun.
The protest came after the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute said Thursday it will conduct the survey until May 10.
The survey will include boring exploration in eight locations, the institute said.
Sample materials obtained by the survey will be used for display in order to raise South Korean people's interest in the islands, the institute said.
