Japan, U.S. Discuss Modifying Futenma Relocation Plan

    April 26, 2010

Tokyo, April 26 (Jiji Press) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada and U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos Friday discussed the possibility of modifying a plan to relocate a U.S. Marine air station in Okinawa Prefecture informed sources said.

The talks were aimed at making a breakthrough to a standoff over where to relocate the Futenma base in the southern Japan prefecture ahead of Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's self-imposed deadline of the end of May for a solution.

The Japanese government is reviewing a 2006 agreement with the United States to move the base to the Henoko coastal area of Marines' Camp Schwab in Nago, also in Okinawa.

But the U.S. government has insisted that the existing plan is the best option.

Okada and Roos discussed whether it is possible to modify the existing plan at the request of the U.S. side, a source with access to the Japanese government said.
