The governor of Kagoshima Prefecture has expressed his opposition to the relocation of the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Okinawa to Tokunoshima Island in his prefecture.

The Japanese government is studying Tokunoshima Island, southwestern Japan, as a possible candidate site for hosting some of the functions of the US Futenma Air Station in Ginowan.

Governor Yuichiro Ito told reporters on Friday that he will oppose the relocation along with the residents of the island and the prefectural assembly.

Regarding the view that hosting the base would benefit Tokunoshima's economy, Ito said the island already has a satisfactory infrastructure and its residents do not want to accept a US military base.

Ito added that the government has not contacted the prefecture about the relocation.
