Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada has praised the United States for pledging not to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear weapons states that comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The US government on Tuesday announced a new nuclear strategy for the next 5 to 10 years.

Okada told reporters on Wednesday that the new US policy is a big step toward achieving President Barack Obama's goal of a world without nuclear weapons. He said the Japanese government shares this goal.

Okada added that the United States says the new policy will not put its allies in harm's way, indicating that Japan's national security will not be affected.

He also said the decommissioning of cruise missiles capable of launching from submarines would lessen the possibility of nuclear weapons being brought into Japan.

Okada said nuclear non-proliferation can be strengthened if other nuclear nations follow the US policy and if such a policy can be enforced by a UN resolution or treaty.

He expressed the hope that the new US policy will have a positive influence on the Non-proliferation Treaty Review conference scheduled for next month.
