Okada welcomes new US-Russia treaty

    Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada says Japan welcomes the new US-Russia treaty to reduce the number of strategic nuclear weapons the 2 countries possess.

    In a statement issued on Thursday night, Okada said the treaty represents a significant step forward in the nuclear disarmament of the United States and Russia.

    He said the signing of the treaty is an important contribution to future discussions at a conference to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in May.
