Okada:working-level talks to be held on Futenma

    April 12, 2010

Japan's Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada says working-level talks may be held with the United States on the relocation of its air base in Okinawa if negotiations enter a detailed stage.

At a Diet committee meeting on Monday, Okada said he will continue talks with US Ambassador to Japan John Roos for the time being over the relocation of the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Okinawa.

Asked about ongoing negotiations with the US and the local governments of candidate sites for the relocation, Okada said an alternative site will be decided during negotiations with all concerned parties.

He added that the government is now explaining a broader version of its relocation plan to the United States.

Okada said he and Roos basically agreed that they will push forward talks on the relocation, and that the US will give answers to some of his questions about its position on the issue.

He said working-level talks are needed if the 2 sides enter into more detailed discussions, but that time has not yet come.
