Okinawa Governor to Attend Anti-Futenma Rally

    April 23, 2010

Naha, Okinawa Pref., April 23 (Jiji Press) -- Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima said Friday he will take part in a weekend rally against a proposal to transfer a key U.S. air base within the southernmost Japan prefecture.

Nakaima told a press conference that it is meaningful to attend the rally because it is scheduled to be joined by many local mayors and prefectural assembly members.

The rally is scheduled for Sunday in the village of Yomitan.

The Japanese government is considering moving some functions of the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma base in Ginowan to an inland area of the Marines' Camp Schwab in Nago, another Okinawa city.

The governor's participation into the rally looks certain to give additional momentum to local opposition to any Futenma relocation within the prefecture.
