The people of Okinawa, southern Japan, will rally on Sunday to demand that a US base located in the middle of a crowded city be moved out of the prefecture.

Organizers, including members of the prefectural assembly, hope the rally will persuade the Japanese and US governments to relocate the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Ginowan city outside of Okinawa.

Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima and 39 mayors from Okinawa's 41 municipalities are expected to attend Sunday's rally in Yomitan village.

Participants plan to adopt a resolution demanding both governments abandon their plans to relocate Futenma's functions within Okinawa.

The two countries agreed in 2006 to move Futenma to a coastal area near US Camp Schwab also in Okinawa. Japan is studying various options, including relocating to Nago, Okinawa.

Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has repeatedly said he will settle the issue by the end of May.
