A former senior US state department official says Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell will discuss the relocation of the US Futenma air station with Japanese officials. Campbell is visiting Japan on Tuesday.

Former deputy secretary of state Strobe Talbott, who is now president of the private Brookings Institution think-tank, met with Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama in Tokyo Monday.

After the meeting, Talbott told reporters that there is a common understanding in the United States that Japan-US relations are important, and in his meeting with Hatoyama he reconfirmed that Japan shares this view.

Talbott said that in order to maintain these relations, the two countries should do everything they can to resolve individual issues such as the relocation of the air station in Okinawa.

Talbott said that very good public channels of communication exist between the governments of Japan and the US, and that these channels are operating at all times. He added that Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell is on his way to Japan.
