US official asks more Japanese aid for Afghanistan

    April 22, 2010

A senior US government official has urged Japan to expand its aid activities in Afghanistan, saying security has improved in more parts of the country.

The US State Department's deputy to the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Daniel Feldman, spoke to NHK in Tokyo on Thursday.

Feldman said security in Afghanistan is stabilizing in areas other than eastern and southern regions where the Taliban have strongholds.

He said the US government will cooperate if Japan expands its scope of its aid activities.

He also acknowledged that erroneous US bombings in Afghanistan are a grave problem, in view of a number of such cases that have affected civilians.

Feldman said the US military has been changing its strategy since last year to minimize risks.

Japan has been helping Afghan people mainly in farming and the medical sector. The efforts are currently limited to the capital Kabul and other areas, due to security reasons.
