Foreign minister Katsuya Okada says Japan and the United States have a shared goal of a nuclear-free world.

Okada spoke with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by phone earlier on Tuesday. He said Clinton briefed him on a new US nuclear strategy.

The foreign minister said the US government is to announce the plan later in the day, and declined to give details of Clinton's briefing.

However, Okada said President Barack Obama intends to reduce the security role of nuclear weapons, with the ultimate aim of achieving a nuclear-free world, a goal with which Japan agrees.

The US is set to release the Nuclear Posture Review, which is expected to rule out US nuclear attacks on countries that comply with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
