Tanigaki denounces Masuzoe's departure

    April 22, 2010

President Sadakazu Tanigaki of the Liberal Democratic Party says Masuzoe will likely face a severe penalty over his departure to form a new party.

Tanigaki told reporters on Thursday that the defection will not be forgiven, suggesting that the possible penalties include expulsion -- the gravest punishment.

He added that Masuzoe asked another LDP member to follow him, an act that he said undermines party discipline.

Tanigaki said Masuzoe, who was elected to the Upper House by proportional representation, should have given up his seat before forming a new party. But Tanigaki added that the defection will have no major impact on his party.
