Deputy assistant secretary of defense David S. Sedney is on island, along with Joint Guam Program Office executive director David Bice. The latter says that the contingent will be here for three days to participate in several meetings, including meetings with the environmental regulatory agencies responsible for the production of the environmental impact statement on the Marines movement to Guam.
Bice says he and Sedney are also here to meet with a delegation of Japanese officials who are arriving tonight. "We'll be touring and briefing them Saturday," he confirmed, "so they'll be able to get to see where the proposed laydown of forces. They'll be getting a strategic overview from both General [Doug] Owens from the Air Force and Admiral [William] French and his staff from the Navy."
Bice says the delegation from Japan consists of senior policy level officials from the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who specialize in the strategic alignment of the U.S./Japan Defense Alignment Agreement. Sedney is an expert in U.S. security relationships in East Asia and said he's here, "To have a chance to see what's here on Guam to learn about the relationship that we and the Department of Defense have with the people on Guam as we look ahead to the increasingly important role that Guam will be playing in the security of the United States."
Bice will provide a briefing to the Department of the Interior's business opportunities in the Islands Conference next Monday.
