The wife of a former top bureaucrat under arrest for accepting bribes from a former executive of a defense contractor has admitted to the allegations, sources close to law enforcement authorities said.Sachiko Moriya, 56, the wife of 63-year-old former Administrative Vice Defense Minister Takemasa Moriya, initially denied the allegations. "He is a friend of mine. Golf outings he organized for us never constituted bribes," she had initially told prosecutors.
Motonobu Miyazaki, 69, former senior managing director with Yamada Corp., spent nearly 3.9 million yen on golf outings as bribes for Moriya and his wife, prosecutors allege. In return, Moriya used his authority as the top bureaucrat in the Defense Ministry to help the firm win defense contracts, according to law enforcers.
Miyazaki has also been arrested for bribing the couple.
