WASHINGTON--U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Japan's ambassador to the United States on Monday that Tokyo should stick to a deal on the relocation of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa Prefecture.
In the unscheduled meeting with Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki, Clinton apparently vented her frustration with Tokyo's attempt to find an alternative to Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, the site the allies agreed on in 2006.
The meeting, which Fujisaki described as "unusual," took place at a time when federal government offices in Washington were shuttered following a weekend snowstorm.
After the meeting, the ambassador said, "Clinton called the meeting because she wanted to convey once again that Washington places emphasis on Japan-U.S. ties."(IHT/Asahi: December 23,2009)
