2008/07/28 07:54Sources say an executive of an organization connected to the Foreign Ministry, who is under arrest, ordered the transfer of about 1.5 million dollars from 3 US paper firms to a Japanese bank account. The account is in the name of a consulting firm to which he served as an advisor.
Executive Director Naoki Akiyama of the Japan-US Center for Peace and Cultural Exchange is suspected of having failed to report over 2 million dollars in consultancy fees he received from defense-related businesses.
Akiyama is alleged to have received the fees via 3 US paper companies.
Akiyama then ordered the transfer of about 1.5 million dollars from the firms to a Japanese bank account.
The prosecutors suspect some of the funds were withdrawn at the request of Akiyama.
They are investigating how the money was spent.
