2008/07/28 16:13A US nuclear aircraft carrier, the Ronald Reagan, has entered Sasebo Port, southwestern Japan.
The San Diego-based aircraft carrier dropped anchor on Monday. The 333-meter long vessel can carry 60 fighter jets and helicopters and has a crew of over 4,200.
It will stay at the port through Friday to restock supplies.
This is the first time since 1983 that 2 nuclear aircraft carriers have visited Sasebo in the space of a year.
The USS Nimitz made a port call in February.
Local residents protested the visit, chanting that the ship must leave. 22 vessels with members of labor unions and peace groups on board sailed alongside the carrier, displaying banners opposing its entry.
