Date Posted: 2008-10-10Mitsuko Tomon rejected a new agreement covering the Nakagusuku Bay Harbor Awase Reclamation Project, saying “It’s a security problem”.
Okinawa’s Governor disagreed, and he signed the new pact covering the U.S. military’s Awase Telecommunication Facility’s security water area user agreement. Governor Hirokazu Nakaima stepped in and signed the renewal, which is valid until 2013.
Tomon, Okinawa City’s mayor, in calling the place ‘a security problem area’, said “this means the new base is taken by the military, so I have refused to sign up. The Prefecture harbor Section said the project “had fallen behind deadlines for construction work, and if we had stopped construction in mid-project, nothing would come out. We had to sign the agreement.”
