A senior US official has refuted comments on US media that the US envoy's attendance at the Hiroshima peace ceremony was an apology for the atomic bombing of the city.
Assistant Secretary of State Philip Crowley stated on Twitter on Friday that the United States has nothing to apologize for regarding Hiroshima, but that it will show its respect for everyone affected by war.
US Ambassador to Japan John Roos became the first government representative to attend the memorial ceremony in the western Japanese city on Friday, which marked the 65th anniversary of the bombing.A US TV network aired an interview with the son of the pilot of the Enola Gay bomber accusing the Obama administration of giving an unspoken apology to Japan. The Enola Gay was the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Crowley stressed the US stance to place importance on an alliance with Japan. He said the US was proud to help Japan rebuild after World War Two, turning an adversary into a staunch ally.
