Tokyo, July 28 (Jiji Press) -- Japan has not been told by the United States of any plans to delay the relocation of its Marines in Okinawa Prefecture, southernmost Japan, to Guam, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said Wednesday.
A senior U.S. official suggested Tuesday that the relocation could be delayed beyond the current deadline of 2014.
"Guam has existing infrastructure deficiencies" that could affect the relocation program, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Jackalyne Pfannenstiel said in written testimony before the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.
Based on this, "the pace and sequencing of construction will be adjusted to stay within the limitations of Guam's utilities, port, roadways, and other systems," Pfannenstiel wrote.
Meanwhile, Sengoku said in Wednesday's news conference, "We haven't received any reports that the U.S. government has abandoned the plan to complete the relocation by 2014."
