Japanese and US officials have held talks on an alternative facility for the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Okinawa.
The officials held their third meeting on specifics of the air station's relocation on Monday in Tokyo.
The 2 countries agreed in May to move the air station from a densely populated area in Ginowan City to a coastal area in Nago City. They also agreed that they will conclude talks on the location and construction methods by the end of August.
The officials are believed to have discussed Japan's proposal to build a single runway instead of 2 runways in a V-shape as originally agreed.
The proposal calls for adjusting the runway's angle so US military helicopters will not fly over residential areas.
The United States maintains that the original plan is the best option. US officials are believed to have asked the Japanese side whether a single runway would hinder helicopter operations or delay an environmental assessment, and how long construction would take.
The meeting will continue until Tuesday.
