Tokyo, July 28 (Jiji Press) -- U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos will attend an annual peace memorial ceremony in Hiroshima, one of the two Japan cities hit by U.S. atomic bombs in 1945, a Japanese government source said Wednesday.
Roos, a personal friend of U.S. President Barack Obama, will be the first U.S. ambassador to Japan to attend the ceremony on Aug. 6.
The decision comes as the Obama administration is promoting nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation policies.
Since 1998, the atomic-bombed city has invited the world's nuclear powers to the ceremony. China, Russia, India and Pakistan have attended the ceremony, but the United States, Britain and France have not.
The Japanese government would welcome the ambassador attending the ceremony, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku told a press conference Wednesday.
