Japan's Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada has expressed hope that US President Barack Obama will attend a memorial service in Hiroshima next year or later.
Okada was responding to the US government's decision to have US Ambassador to Japan John Roos attend a ceremony in Hiroshima on August 6th marking the 1945 atomic bombing of the city. Roos will be the first US government official to attend the annual event.Okada said he's very grateful that the US government made the decision even though opinions within the administration may differ.
Okada said the visit will mark a significant step, and that he will calmly wait for the next step, suggesting that Obama may someday make a similar visit.
