US Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell says stability in Japanese politics is in the best interests of Japan and the United States.
Campbell made the remarks in an interview with NHK on Monday.
He said a continuing succession of leaders makes it difficult to establish personal relationships of trust.Naoto Kan is Japan's fifth Prime Minister in four years.
Campbell said a meeting between Kan and US President Barack Obama on Sunday was positive. He said a good relationship at the top will allow for close coordination between the two countries.
Referring to the relocation of the US Futenma Air Station in Japan's Okinawa prefecture, Campbell said the US will handle the issue with sensitivity. Okinawa is strongly opposed to the Japan-US agreement to relocate the base within the prefecture.
