South Korean President Lee Myung Bak and Chinese President Hu Jintao remain at odds over how to deal with North Korea's alleged involvement in the sinking of a South Korean naval vessel in March.
The 2 leaders met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Toronto, Canada, on Sunday and discussed the sinking incident, allegedly the result of a North Korean torpedo attack.
Lee said North Korea's repeated provocations pose a serious threat to the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and broader Northeast Asia.
He added that the international community should cooperate to prevent a recurrence, and stressed that the UN Security Council needs to issue a tough message to the North.Hu responded by saying that relevant countries should stay calm and deal with the matter carefully.
He said China is fully aware of South Korea's position and that they will continue to discuss the issue.
Earlier on Saturday, the Group of Eight leaders released a joint statement that condemned North Korea over the sinking.
The leaders of Japan and the United States separately tried to convince Hu to join their efforts along with South Korea.
