Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have agreed to take the initiative in seeking a solution to a long-standing territorial issue involving Russian-held islands which are claimed by Japan.
Kan and Medvedev held talks on Saturday in Canada after the G8 summit.
Kan said it is encouraging that Medvedev has a strong wish to resolve the territorial issue.Kan said Japanese people have cherished the desire to resolve the issue for almost 65 years.
Medvedev said it is one of the most difficult issues to solve for the two countries, but that he wants to explore a possible solution that is acceptable for both countries.
Referring to a natural gas project that includes Japanese firms in Sakhalin in Russia's Far East, Medvedev expressed hope for expanding bilateral economic cooperation beyond the energy sector.
