The leaders of Japan and China have expressed different views on the alleged sinking by North Korea of a South Korean warship in March.
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan held talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Canada.
Kan said North Korea's action threatened peace and stability in the region and is not permissible. He asked for Hu's cooperation so the UN Security Council can issue a clear message to North Korea.Hu said it was an unhappy incident. But he added each country should take a calm attitude toward it.
Regarding a series of strikes by Chinese workers that have recently affected Japanese automakers, Kan said he is paying attention to labor disputes in China. Hu said China will deal with labor disputes appropriately.
Kan asked Hu to start formal negotiations as soon as possible on a joint oil and gas development project in the East China Sea, in line with May's agreement between then Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. Hu said he hopes positive efforts will be made based on the basic agreement.
Kan and Hu also agreed that the defense authorities of the 2 countries will promote dialogue to build a relationship of trust between the 2 countries.
