The annual Group of Eight summit has opened in the Canadian resort of Huntsville near Toronto. Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan explained his fiscal rehabilitation and economic growth strategy.
The G8 leaders exchanged views on the current state of the world economy and the challenges it faces for about one hour and a half over lunch on Friday.
Kan told the leaders that the ongoing European crisis is presenting them with the difficult challenge of restoring fiscal health and achieving economic growth at the same time.
Kan talked about his plans to reinforce Japan's economy, finances, and social security system.He said that in a graying society, it is important to include nursing care and medical services as part of a growth strategy.
The leaders reportedly took interest in Kan's strategy. Many said the global economy is recovering more strongly than had been expected but that attention is needed in the short run due to weak jobs data.
The G8 leaders agreed that it is necessary to restore their countries' fiscal health so that the world economy can achieve sustainable growth. They also agreed that they should not miss the right timing for carrying out fiscal reconstruction.
At the welcoming ceremony before the summit, US President Barack Obama congratulated Kan on taking office and expressed pleasure in meeting him.
