Kan, Lee agree to coordinate responses to N.Korea

Japan and South Korea have agreed to continue to cooperate in dealing with North Korea at the UN Security Council over the sinking of a South Korean naval ship allegedly by the North.

The agreement came on Saturday in a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and South Korean President Lee Myung Bak in the Canadian city of Toronto.

Prime Minister Kan described the fatal sinking as intolerable, and said that such an act poses a threat to peace and stability in the region.

President Lee thanked Kan for playing a leading role in drafting a G8 statement condemning North Korea's act in cooperation with the United States.

Kan also noted that this year marks the 100th anniversary of Japan's annexation of the Korean Peninsula in 1910.

Kan stressed that he will not turn his eyes away from the past and that he will do all he can to build a truly future-oriented friendship for the next 100 years while learning from history.
